Sea Freight vs Air Freight from China to Indonesia: Cost, Transit Time and When to Use Each

The same carton can cost four times more to move by air than by sea, and arrive three weeks earlier. Choosing between the two is not about which is better — it is about which cost you can absorb: freight cost or inventory cost.

Transit time, port to door

Published sailing schedules only tell part of the story. What matters is the door-to-door window, which includes booking, loading, sailing, clearance and final delivery.

  • Sea freight, direct port pair (Shenzhen or Guangzhou to Jakarta): roughly 5–8 days sailing, plus 3–6 working days for clearance and delivery. Plan 12–18 days door to door.
  • Sea freight to Surabaya, Belawan or Makassar: add a feeder leg or a longer direct rotation. Plan 18–28 days.
  • Air freight (Guangzhou, Shenzhen or Hong Kong to Jakarta): 1–2 days in the air, 2–4 working days for clearance and delivery. Plan 5–9 days door to door.

These are normal ranges, not promises. Peak season, carrier rollovers and red-lane inspections move them by several days in either direction.

Cost structure: what you are actually paying for

Sea freight is priced by volume — chargeable weight is usually CBM, with a minimum per shipment. Air freight is priced by chargeable weight, which is the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (length × width × height in cm ÷ 6000).

A few practical consequences:

  • Light, bulky cargo (furniture, packaging, plush toys, empty boxes) is punished by air because volumetric weight dominates. Sea is almost always correct.
  • Dense, high-value cargo (electronics, spare parts, accessories, samples) is often cheaper by air than the sticker price suggests, because the volume is small and the inventory saving is large.
  • Small shipments below about 100 kg are usually better on an air or consolidated LCL service; below that threshold the fixed costs of a sea booking dominate.

When air freight pays for itself

Air is the right call in four situations:

  1. Restocking a bestseller. If a product is out of stock and each day of stockout costs more than the air premium, fly it.
  2. Launching a new SKU. Ship a small air batch to validate demand before committing a container.
  3. Seasonal windows. Goods that miss Ramadan, Harbolnas or Christmas may as well not arrive.
  4. High value density. When the cargo value per kilogram is high, freight becomes a rounding error and cash-flow speed matters more.

When sea freight is the only sensible option

  • Furniture, building materials, machinery, raw materials and anything sold by the container
  • Orders above roughly 3–5 CBM, where LCL consolidation starts to lose its advantage
  • Full container loads, where the per-unit cost drop is steepest
  • Cargo with no deadline pressure and a healthy cash buffer

What changes under DDP

Under DDP, the forwarder handles export clearance, freight, Indonesian import clearance, duty, VAT and final delivery as one price. That removes the customs variables from your comparison, so the decision reduces to a clean trade-off: the per-kilogram premium of air against the inventory carrying cost of sea.

Two things to confirm before you compare quotes:

  • Whether the rate is charged on actual weight, volumetric weight or CBM, and what the minimum is
  • Whether duty and VAT are included or billed separately at clearance

A simple decision rule

If the shipment is under 100 kg, high value per kilogram, or needed within two weeks — use air. If it is over 3 CBM, low value per kilogram, or you can plan a month ahead — use sea. Everything in between is a cash-flow calculation, and it is worth running both numbers before booking.
